Mike Rowe led the Bobcats to a one-point victory Friday night, in the football season opener against the Miami Vandals.
Rowe took over as the team's quarterback, getting the job done in the air and on the ground. Rowe, a junior, rushed for 100 yards and threw two touchdowns for 48 yards.
Even though the young Bobcats earned a win Friday, they still have a lot of work to do as the season moves forward.
"We are not where we need to be," Rowe said. "We have to get a lot faster off the line and read blocks a lot better. In the end, we did what we had to do, and I am glad we got the win."
The home opener got off to a quick start for the new Bobcats' offense, with Dillon Dastrup capping a seven-play drive with a 33-yard run to paydirt. The extra-point attempt was blocked, giving Benson a 6-0 lead with 9:28 left in the first quarter.
Miami fired right back; quarterback Riley Mawson connected with Zachary Johnson for a 68-yard touchdown.
Jose Frayrez pounded in the two-point conversion to give the Vandals the 8-6 lead with 8:24 left in the opening quarter.
After the opening drives, the game slowed down, giving Benson coaches an opportunity to see kicker T.J. Greer in action.
In his first punt, Greer had a 32-yard kick, and later in the game hit a 63-yard punt.
Before the end of the first quarter, the Vandals had extended their lead after Mawson ran 10 yards untouched to score. The two-point conversion failed, giving the Vandals a 14-6 lead.
In the second quarter, Benson tied the game when Rowe attempted his first pass of the season, connecting with Derrick Elsmore on a 29-yard strike. Daniel Naegle ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14 all with 7:22 left in the first half.
With no scoring in the third quarter, Benson broke the tie in the fourth when the Bobcats' new starting tailback Brevin Barney caught a 13-yard pass to score with 8:47 left to play.
The extra-point attempt was good, giving the Bobcats a 21-14 lead.
The Vandals didn't go down without a fight, getting the ball on the Bobcats' 40-yard line with 8:41 left to play.
Mawson capped off a six-play drive with a 45-yard run up the middle of the Bobcats' defense.
With a missed extra point, the Bobcats held on to a 21-20 lead with 4:25 left to play.
Greer recovered the ensuing onside kick attempt, giving the Bobcats a first down on their own 48-yard-line.
On second down, Rowe carried the ball into Vandals' territory inside the 30-yard-line, allowing the Bobcats to run out the clock for the win.
After the game, Coach Chris Determan said it's a victory, but told the young team there is still a lot of work to do.
"A win is a lot better than a loss," he said. "But we still have a lot of work to do. We did enough to win this game, but need to improve as the year goes on to end up where we want to be. Far too many penalties during the game and most are correctable."
In the first half, the Bobcats racked up 85 yards in penalties, with most of those coming from false start flags.
The Bobcats' schedule will not get any easier. They will take on the 3A Empire Ravens Friday, in Vail.
In 2009, the Ravens went undefeated in the regular season.
On Sept. 10, the Bobcats will travel to Canyon State for another non-conference contest, before returning home on Sept. 17 to face 2A East Conference opponent Thatcher.
