Dr. Joseph B. Baugh of Benson presented a research paper at an international business conference and doctoral consortium held in Lyon, France on June 14-16. The conference, which targeted organizational development and change, was co-sponsored by the Institut de Socio-Economie des Entreprises et des Organisations (ISEOR) and the Organizational Development Division of the Academy of Management.
This trilingual conference is held annually at the Universit/ Jean Moulin Lyon and features papers presented in English, French, and Spanish. Papers presented at the conference are published in the conference proceedings.
Although Dr. Baugh was the primary author of the paper, he was assisted in the research study by two colleagues from Capella University who are also professors at Central Michigan University (Dr. Marilyn Harris) and the Keller Graduate School of Management (Dr. Anne Hallcom). The paper, "Changes That Make a Difference: Earning a PhD While Maintaining an Active Life," examined critical success factors as well as those factors which impede earning an advanced degree from the perspective of the student. The paper received an honored position on the schedule as the first paper presented after the opening plenary session.
While in Europe, Baugh visited with colleagues in Paris, Geneva, and Barcelona to explore future research opportunities. He also attended the annual conference of the Academy of Management in Montreal, Canada in August. At this conference, he and Dr. Harris presented a professional development workshop based on their research to a group of doctoral students and professors. Future research plans include expanding the current study to examine the influence of family, instructors, institutions, and society on the development and change model for advanced degree seekers. The research team ultimately plans to develop a book from their work.
Baugh earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and an MBA from the University of Arizona. His Ph.D. in organization and management with a specialization in leadership was conferred by Capella University. He is an adjunct faculty member for Cochise College, the University of Arizona South, and the University of Phoenix, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in information technology and business. Baugh is program director for the Bachelor of Applied Science - Supervision degree program at UA-South and sits on doctoral dissertation committees for the University of Phoenix and Capella University.
Since 1982, he has also been an employee of Arizona Electric Power Cooperative, Inc. in Benson, where he is currently the Power Trading Services Manager.
