Retail, restaurant sales down, accommodation up

In June, Cochise County's accommodation industry saw a slight gain in sales over June last year, while retail and restaurant and bar sales dropped. Countywide accommodation sales, which include hotel, motel, and other temporary lodging stays of less than 30 days, were up 0.4 percent in June, following a 13.6 percent increase in May. June was the fifth consecutive month of growth. For the first six months of 2010, sales were up 5.5 percent after adjusting for inflation.

Despite growth in Cochise County's accommodation sales, restaurant and bar sales were down 1.3 percent in June, following four consecutive months of growth. For the first six months of 2010, sales were up 0.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

Retail sales in June were down 4 percent after the inflation adjustment. This was the fourth straight month of decline and sales have been down in five of the past nine months. From January through June, sales were down 6.3 percent after inflation.


At the city level, restaurant and bar receipts in Benson were up 2.5 percent in June. In the first half of 2010, sales were down 0.9 percent. Despite the year-to-date decline, restaurant and bar sales in Benson have seen positive growth in 16 of the past 22 months.

Benson's accommodation receipts in June were up by 14.4 percent compared to June 2009. From January through June, sales were up 5.2 percent. Sales have been up in 10 of the past 12 months.

Retail sales are not reported for Benson due to the city's two-tiered tax system, which precludes accurately estimating sales based on tax collections. Retail sales tax revenue for sales occurring in June, however, was up 7.2 percent (unadjusted) when compared to June last year. For the first six months of the year, unadjusted retail sales tax revenue was up 2.4 percent, failing to keep pace with inflation, which was 2.6 percent.

Retail sales in Bisbee were up 9.2 percent in June compared to June last year. Sales were up 0.7 percent for the first half of the year. Despite the year-to-date gain, sales were down in four of the first six months of the year and have been down in 20 of the most recent 23 months.

Bisbee's restaurant and bar sales were up 15.6 percent in June, the fourth consecutive month of growth. From January through June, sales were up 5.5 percent.

Bisbee's accommodation receipts were up 23.2 percent in June. Sales have been up in three in the most recent four months. Despite the increase, sales were down 5.4 percent in the first half of 2010.

In Douglas, restaurant and bar sales were down 11 percent in June. From January through June, sales were down 0.8 percent.

Retail sales are not reported for Douglas due to the city's two-tiered tax system, which precludes accurately estimating sales based on tax collections. Retail sales tax revenue for sales occurring in June, however, was up 5.8 percent (unadjusted) compared to June last year. For the first half of the year, unadjusted retail sales tax revenue was down 1.2 percent.

Accommodation sales are not reported for Douglas due to the small number of establishments and the Arizona Department of Revenue's confidentiality policy.

In Huachuca City, retail sales were up 8.4 percent in June. Sales have been up in five of the most recent six months. For the first half of the year, sales were up 3.4 percent. Accommodation and restaurant and bar sales are not reported for Huachuca City due to the small number of establishments and ADOR's confidentiality policy.

In Sierra Vista, retail sales were up less than 0.1 percent in June. From January through June, sales were down 2.7 percent. Sales have been up in five of the past eight months.

Sierra Vista's restaurant and bar sales were down 2.6 percent in June. Despite the decline, sales were up 2.5 percent for the first half of the year. The city's restaurant and bar sales have been up in 10 of the past 14 months.

Sierra Vista's accommodation sales were down 7.6 percent in June, following four consecutive months of growth. For the first six months of the year, sales were up 4.5 percent.

In Tombstone, retail sales were down 3.6 percent in June. For the first half of 2010, sales were down 3.8 percent. Sales have been down in 22 of the past 26 months.

Tombstone's restaurant and bar sales were up 39 percent in June, following a 33.4 percent increase in May. For the first half of the year, sales were up 13.3 percent. Sales have been up in seven of the past nine months.

Despite the increase in restaurant and bar sales, accommodation receipts in Tombstone were down 60.8 percent in June, following three months of growth. For the first six months of the year, sales were down 7.9 percent.

In Willcox, restaurant and bar sales were up 2.1 percent in June. From January through June, sales were down 7.8 percent. Sales have been up in six of the past nine months.

Accommodation receipts in Willcox were up 92.2 percent in June. Despite the increase, sales from January through June were down 10.8 percent. Sales have been down in 25 of the past 33 months.

Retail sales are not reported for Willcox due to the city's two-tiered tax system. Unadjusted retail sales tax revenue, however, was up 11.1 percent in June.

For the first six months of the year, unadjusted retail sales tax revenue was up 11.8 percent.
