Benson VFW addresses questions
This in reference to the letter last week (Sept. 1) and the article in the week previous (Aug. 25.) There seems to be several questions that need to be addressed. The VFW does provide Honor Guard services to all veterans, not just VFW members. However many of our Honor Guard are employed and not always available; we would like to have a two- or three-day notice.
This is not always possible. When there is a funeral at one of our state or national cemeteries, the active duty military will provide the Honor Guard. Our local funeral homes are well aware of this and they provide excellent service to our community. They go out of their way to provide proper and dignified services for our veterans and their families. Sometimes it is necessary to even provide clothing for the veteran when nobody will claim him or her. We are blessed to have such caring people in our community.
Also, all veterans and their families should know what the VA will provide. They will provide a burial plot or niche at a state or national cemetery.
They also provide a marker and certificate from the president of the United States giving thanks to the deceased veteran. Along with the above, they do provide $300 for expenses. They do not pay for caskets or urns, nor do they pay for the cost of a funeral or cremation.
