In a strong defensive outing Friday night, the St. David Tigers shut out Gila Bend 52-0 in the first 1A South Conference game of the season.

Tigers' quarterback Tyler Davis got things going in the first quarter, finding the end zone from 7 yards out.

Jeremy Gillette scored on a 2-yard run later that quarter to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead.

Gila Bend maintained possession most of the second quarter and racked up almost 100 rushing yards, but the Tigers' defense managed to keep them from scoring

The only scoring in the second quarter was a 27-yard fumble recovery return by Anthoney Prestley, which was set up by a big hit from Andrew Judd, who forced two fumbles on the night.

The Tigers led 21-0 at halftime.

St. David got the second half kickoff and marched down the field quickly on passes by Davis to receivers Nathan Mayberry and Shane Bradford, but the drive stalled inside the red zone where St. David failed to convert on fourth down.

After Gila Bend took over, Judd forced another fumble and Gillette recovered, giving the Tigers a first down near the goal line.

St. David scored again in the third quarter on a 25-yard Braden Murray run, which was set up by a 36-yard punt return by Mayberry

With the second team on the field in the fourth, tailback Ricky Schofield rushed for 32 yards in the fourth quarter and found the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run.

On Gila Bend's ensuing drive, Murray intercepted a pass and ran 45 yards for his second touchdown.

Gila Bend coughed up the ball again, which was recovered by Tyler Prestley.

With the ground and air game going well, the Tigers looked to special teams in the fourth quarter. German exchange student Gotz Nieland was good on a 47-yard field goal, making him perfect on the day.

Offensive standouts were Davis, who finished 12 of 18 for 234 yards, Murray, who led the Tigers' rushing with 59 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Nieland, who added 10 points with his leg.

There were many defensive standouts for the Tigers in this shutout victory. Gillette led with 10 tackles. Andrew Judd forced two fumbles, had a sack, and made 7 total tackles. Mayberry also had 7 tackles, and Anthoney Prestley had 7 tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

St. David is now 2-0 on the season with two shutout victories on the road, and 1-0 in conference play.

They continue conference play with their home opener on Friday against a much-improved Ajo team, which is also 2-0.

Kickoff is 7 p.m.
