While St. David appears to be picking up right where they left off last season, the Benson Bobcats' varsity volleyball team is already struggling, losing the first two games of the season.

The Bobcats opened the season against a tough 3A Empire team, losing 1-3.

The Lady Bobcats won the first game 25-21, but lost the next three 25-15, 25-10 and 25-13.

"We are struggling with our server return and our rhythm," said Coach Kimberly East. "This team has got a lot of potential, it may take a while to get their confidence up and to believe in themselves."

Confidence played a big factor in Thursday's inner-valley contest against St. David.

Struggling with a serve return, the Bobcats' backcourt appeared confused throughout most of the contest. In the first game, the Bobcats were dominated 25-2.

In the second and third games, the Bobcats came together, but still lost 25-15 and 27-25.

Kimberly Brogan led the Bobcats, scoring 4 points with 9 blocks, 6 kills and 6 digs.

"We are really struggling with our serve return," East said. "We need to overcome some simple issues and play our game. They are a very athletic team and I expect them to play better each match."

St. David has been a strong opponent in the 1A South Conference for the last three seasons.

Stats for St. David were not provided.
