Despite loss, Determan sees improvement

Despite a 34-7 loss to 3A Empire in Vail, Coach Christ Determan said the Bobcats' football team took a step in the right direction.
"Empire is a good team. We did shore up some of our problems from the first game," Determan said. "We cut our penalties down to four from 16 and increased the speed of our game, but it still needs to be faster. We still have things to work on, but we did take a step in the right direction."
After a one-point victory a week before against Miami, the Bobcats had a big test Friday night, against Mito Mendivil and a tough Empire Ravens team.
In the first quarter, Empire put two touchdowns on the board to take a 21-7 lead.
Brevin Barney got the first and only Bobcats' points of the night in the second quarter, finding the end zone from 15 yards out. Daniel Naegle's extra-point attempt was good, cutting Empire's lead to 21-7 before the half.
Barney had 10 carries for 48 yards. Dillon Dastrup led the Bobcats' rush attack, racking up 52 yards on 12 carries.
The Bobcats had no answer for the Ravens in the second, losing 34-7. The Bobcats' defense allowed the Ravens to rack up 440 yards on offense, 202 of those on the ground.
Derek Ellsmore and Dastrup led the Bobcats' defense with 11 tackles each. Dastrup had 4 assists and recovered an Empire fumble.
This week, the Bobcats continue in non-conference play at home against Canyon State, which Determan said could be a tough game for the young Benson team.
"Canyon State is athletic and fast," he said. "We will need to control their speed this week."
Last year, the Bobcats faced Canyon state twice, winning both games.
Friday night kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
