Letter writer 'misinformed

Published: Wednesday, January 25, 2012 8:24 AM CST
In response to your letter in the San Pedro Valley News-Sun. I believe you are very misinformed. I highly doubt that the majority of Benson residents and business people agree with you.

You may have heard (or maybe you have not) "Build it and they will come!" Well, how about a new one that says, Push them away, and they shall leave. I am sure after reading your letter, there are many snowbirds who feel they are being asked not to return to the city of Benson next season. I do know every other city in Arizona would love to have our money. You should probably consult your state sales tax people about the amount of extra sales tax is collected while the snowbirds are in your city.

Maybe you should ask your local restaurants if we are taking advantage of their facilities. Ask your local golf courses if we are taking advantage of their facilities. Ask your local newspaper if we are taking advantage of their facilities . Ask your local fuel stores if we are taking advantage of their facilities. Ask your local Realtors if we are taking advantage of their facilities. Ask your local barbers and beauticians if we are taking advantage of their facilities. This list can go on and on. How about the doctors, propane dealers, hardware and lumber stores, tire and service stores, etc. Ask them if we bring very little into your economy. I am sure the local business people love it when we fill their streets.

Would the RV parks need to hire you if we were not here? If you are worried about the few small jobs the RV people take in the parks, maybe you should think about all the jobs that are created by the influx of snowbirds. How many people are laid off after the snowbirds leave for the summer?

In conclusion, I do not believe the City of Benson will lose the snowbirds because of one individual who did not think before speaking. Benson is loved by many snowbirds who have been coming here for many years.

" Mr. Kolar,
I couldn't agree with you more sir. The poor misguided man who wrote that bitter letter is not indicative of Benson 's attitude towards snowbirds. He is what I lovingly refer to as one of the "Big Mouth Minority". I speak for a majority of folks here that appreciate you and I have been fortunate to count a good many snowbirds as my friends. They have supported both my business and me as a person in the years I have known them. What the writer does not realize is that with a bitter attitude such as his he wouldn't last too long working in a place of hospitality such as an RV park anyway! So don't mind the minority voice and keep coming back my friend you will be welcomed and appreciated.

" As usual, there is a noisy minority that squawks a lot.
I appreciate your patronage of my restaurant. We couldn't survive without you.
Some of our snowbird customers are sweet friends we love to see return every year!!! "

" Oh lets not get our winter feathers all up in a ruffle. Nor is there a need to be kissing any snowbird bootie either. Benson was founded and built without the birds and could easily get along now if they stopped coming. Benson's economy is not going to collapse because someone from up north decides to buy their winter booty of Jack Daniels in Ajo instead of Benson. Sorry but you are just not as important as you thing you are. "
