The Benson girls continue their winning ways, notching three more "W's."

The host Lady Bobcats opened the week with a 55-42 victory over Bisbee.

The score is not entirely indicative of the game. Benson was able to put the game away in the final eight minutes of play, leading 35-31.

"We struggled shooting field goals and free throws," said Benson Head Coach Kimberly East. This is uncharacteristic of this team. Bisbee is a good team. We finally wore them down and had a very strong fourth quarter. We did much better controlling the ball, and outrebounded a much bigger team by 20. I am very proud of these girls."

Stephanie Ramirez and Kady East each scored 12 points to lead the Bobcats, folowed by Stacey Ramirez with 11, and Kimberly and Kourtney Brogan with six points each.

Kimberly Brogan and Kady East crashed the boards for the Bobcats with 11 and 10 rebounds respectively, while Emily Gudvangen brought down eight rebounds.

The Bobcats trailed by a bucket 14-12 after the first quarter and led 22-21 at the end of the first half.

A 20-11 fourth-quarter run ensured the win for the Bobcats who improved to 18-1 overall.

On Thursday Benson hosted and defeated Patagonia 59-26.

Stacey Ramirez scored 12 points while Kady East scored 10 and Stephanie Ramirez scored nine to pace the Bobcats' offensive arsenal.

Benson led 29-7 after the first quarter and 46-10 at the end of the first half.

"The girls started out of the gates really strong," said Coach East. "We had plenty of scoring possibilities; everyone on the team contributed. We had set some team goals, and achieved all but one. We did turn the ball over way too much. We will continue to work on this. To be a contender at the state level, you must minimize these types of mistakes and play smooth and under complete control."

Stephanie Ramirez was the leading rebounder with 15 followed by Kimberly Brogan with 10 and Alissa Montijo with seven.

The same teams squared a couple of nights later in Patagonia with Benson taking that contest 55-32.

"We started this game just the opposite of Thursday's; we couldn't get anything started. Our defense was pretty good, but we just couldn't get the shots to fall."

Stacey Ramirez scored 14 points while Stephanie Ramirez scored 13 and Kady East seven to lead the Bobcats.

Leading 9-4 after the first quarter and 19-17 at the half, the Bobcats put up 28 third-quarter points and held Patagonia to 15 points in the entire second half, with nine of those coming in the fourth quarter.

"We are still struggling with ball control," said Coach East. "We have got to get better at this.

Benson looked to avenge its only blemish on their 19-1 record when the Douglas Bulldogs were in town Tuesday night, however that game was held after the News-Sun's press time. The Bobcats travel to Willcox Thursday and are home Tuesday, Jan. 31, hosting Desrert Christian.
