St. David went 2-0 in games against St. Augustine on Tuesday in Tucson and on Thursday at home against Bisbee to run their overall record to 15-5 and 11-2 in power point games.
In a game that was over fast, the Tigers were able to play all of their players extensive minutes and all of them got into the scoring column. Chelsey Stover led the way with 15 points, followed by Kayla Bradford and Marissa Webb with 13 and 10 respectfully.
"I wasn't to happy with our defense in the first quarter and I told the girls so," said Head Coach Ira Lewis. "After that they played much better defensively moving their feet and hands."
The Tigers held a 20-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and 35-8 at the half.
"This place and the visiting locker room have a strong impact on our returning players. It was at this gym and in this locker room that the success of last year and this year were forged with a long heart-to-heart between the team. The team decided to pursue a different course and a few of the girls who were going to play for us decided that they didn't want to be part of that change and ended up not playing for us. That forced a young team, last year, to grow up quickly and the fruits of that forced maturation can be seen in the team this year."
On Thursday, St. David topped visiting Bisbee 48-38.
Stover scored 17 points to go with five rebounds, four steals and an assist to lead the Tigers. Jacquez followed with another double-double. Jacquez had 11 points, 16 re-bounds, eight steals and an assist and Webb had 10 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Kayla Bradford added an 8-point effort with 18 rebounds, two steals and two assists.
The Tigers got off to a slow start against Bisbee but stayed within striking range until the second and third quarters came around where they blitzed the Pumas 33-15 to forge a commanding lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Pumas fought back in the final quarter and whittled St. David's lead to nine, but the Tigers were able to respond with a quick 6-0 run to pull comfortably back in front.
""The girls played a great game," said Lewis. "We knew Bisbee was going to come at us hard, which they did, but we were able to hang around until we caught our legs in the second quarter and pull away.
"Chelsey had a great game. Not only did she score 14 points in the first half, but she also limited Bisbee's little shooting guard to six points in the first half. Late in the second quarter when the Bisbee guard scored a three to cut our lead to nine, I almost got mad at Chelsey, but then she steps up and hits a 22-foot jumper to close the half and put us back up by 12. That was big going into the half because it set the stage for the beginning of the third quarter when we pushed the lead up to 18," said Lewis.
"I was happy for the girls but we got sloppy in the fourth quarter, on both ends, and I had to go back to my starters. Then Marissa fouled out, leaving us without a point guard, but we were able to weather the storm at the end," said Lewis.
With the win the Tigers moved into one of the top spots in Div. 4-Sec. 2 power rankings. With five more games to go, the Tigers control their destiny heading into sectionals, but they know there are some tough games coming up.
"We have Pima and Benson on the last week of the season. Both teams are ranked in the top five in their respective divisions, so we will find out how good we are heading into sectionals in February," said Lewis.
The Tigers are at home this week for both games. On Thursday night Patagonia will be visiting and on Friday Academy of Tucson will visit.
