BHS wrestlers 4-0 in Coolidge duals
Benson topped Casa Grande 57-18, Coronado 60-24, Santa Cruz 42-27 and Coolidge 48-35 last Wednesday at Santa Cruz multi dual meet.
The return of Dallas Dastrup at 138 and Brendon Benton at 195 made a big difference, according to Head Coach Mark Mabry.
While still not filling four of the 14 weight classifications, the Bobcats have found it difficult to win a lot of the dual matches.
Freshman Chance Sutton at 106 had an action packed match vs. Vidal of Santa Cruz, winning a decision 17-14. Chance closed the deal with a late third-period reversal and near fall. "He never gave up the fight," said Mabry. "Another freshman, Kieran Maakestad at 145, was the fall leader for the day, pinning three opponents. Ross Ens at 113, Dallas Dastrup, Joey Simpson at 170 and David Olivarez at 182 each pinned two opponents for the day. Sutton, Monti Reynolds at 132, Dillon Dastrup at 160 and Benton each pinned one opponent. Dayne Owen at 152 earned 12 points for the team and Morgan Salas wrestled an exhibition match at 160.
Benson will finish its dual meet season this Wednesday traveling to Thatcher to face the Eagles, Morenci, Santa Cruz and San Carlos.
The Cats will then travel north to Mogollon High School in Heber for an individually bracketed tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The following Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4, the Cats will host the Sectional Tournament for state qualification.
"The team has been hard at it with only one week day off all season, practices have been grueling and I am very proud of their dedication," said Mabry.
