Two men who allegedly murdered a woman in Benson last year are scheduled for jury trials this summer in Cochise County Superior Court, but the trial dates may be postponed.
Jarod Michael Larson, 24, and Robert Eugene Sappington, 38, are charged with first-degree murder of Devvra Alesya Keyes and abandonment or concealment of her dead body on Sept. 7, 2010.
Keyes’ body was found in February of 2011 at the bottom of a sewer system manhole located off of El Paso Lane near N. Ocotillo Road in Benson. The state is seeking the death penalty for both defendants.
The trials are currently scheduled to begin June 25 and Aug. 20. During a hearing on Friday in Division 3 court, defense attorneys told Judge Wallace Hoggatt they will not be prepared by the scheduled trial dates.
Hoggatt scheduled a hearing for May 18 regarding motions to continue the trial dates and the possible scheduling of new trial dates. The prosecution will contact the representatives of the victim regarding this matter.
Sappington is being represented by Ruben Teran and Joseph DiRoberto, while Larson is being represented by Laura Udall and Erin Carrillo. Deputy county attorneys James Glanville and Brian McIntyre are prosecuting this case.
