The Benson/San Pedro Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Benson Lions Club will be co-hosting a candidates’ forum on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Lions Club, 599 South Dragoon St.
The primary election for the City of Benson is March 12, with the general election on May 21.
“Geoff Oldfather (public relations manager for Arizona Electric Power Cooperative) will be our moderator,” said Lupe Diaz, president of the Benson Chamber of Commerce.
The city election features two mayoral candidates, with incumbent Toney King running against current councilmember David Lambert. There are five candidates running for three council seats, with incumbents Lori McGoffin and Nick Maldonado running for reelection and newcomers Peter Wangsness, Brian Crafts and Jeff Cook also vying for seats on the council.
Thursday marks Benson’s second candidates’ forum, with the first event sponsored by the VFW Men’s Auxiliary on Feb. 20. Despite dismal weather conditions, several members of the community attended the event, held at the Benson VFW.
“I believe these candidates’ forums provide an important venue for the community to hear where candidates stand on a number of issues,” said Diaz. “They’re a great way to meet the candidates and help voters become better informed before they vote.”
Important details regarding the election include the following:
• Voter registration deadline for the general election is April 22.
• The general election will be held to fill any council positions that may not be seated at the primary election.
