The Knights of Columbus will be hosting its seventh annual golf tournament on Feb. 23 at the San Pedro Golf Course.

The Marie Lovell, Barbara Hug and Paul Padia Memorial Charity Golf Tournament is named after two wives of Knights of Columbus members who died from cancer, along with now deceased Knight, Paul Padia, who also fell victim to the disease.

While the event primarily raises money for the University of Arizona Cancer Research Center, there also is a John Lodzinski Scholarship Fund, in honor of long-time community member and former Knight, John Lodzinski, who died of cancer in 2012. The scholarship fund is available to local college-bound high school graduates, said Mike Hug, who is a member of the local Knights of Columbus Council and one of the event organizers. “Last year was our most successful endeavor since starting the tournament, and we are hoping this year will be even better,” Hug said.

Tournament organizers are offering a $10,000 hole-in-one prize, along with a Dixon Challenge Hole. Prizes for the longest drive and closest to the green will be offered to both men and women, along with prizes to the first-, second- and third-place finishers. Sponsorships have made it possible to offer generous raffle and auction items, to include UA basketball tickets, Diamondbacks game tickets, wine tasting vouchers from several local wineries and much more, Hug said.

Currently, the council is looking for more sponsors for both T-boxes and family sponsorships. T-boxes are available at $75 each, while family sponsors are $25. The family will have its name posted on the sponsor board and will be recognized during the tournament. Donations are tax deductable for the 2013 tax year, said Hug.

“This is a good way to show your support for the Council and to help provide funding for cancer research,” he added. “Many of our T-box sponsors have been with us the entire six-year run of the tournament and we greatly appreciate their continued support.”

The tournament draws participants from other communities, with players coming from Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson and Sierra Vista in past events.
