The St. David Tigers are riding a wave of momentum with a pair of regular season wins to start the season and a second-place finish in Saturday’s Thatcher Invitational.
The Lady Tigers opened their regular season Aug. 28, hosting and defeating Bisbee 25-8, 28-26, 25-14, then followed that up with a straight set win over the Benson Bobcats in St. David on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 25-12, 25-15, 25-16.
In the season opener Chelsey Stover had eight kills and Kayla Bradford had four, while Shaelynn Trejo, BreAnne Webb and Sierra Waite each followed with three kills. Trejo also netted a dozen assists and Stover had seven, while Webb had eight service aces, followed by Stover with five and Trejo with three.
Against Benson last week, Stover slammed home 12 kills while Trejo’s setting resulted in 15 assists. Defensively, Rylie Vargas had 16 digs and Tarryn Lee had 14 in the win over the Bobcats.
“We have already had injuries,” said Head Coach Tylene Miller. “McKenna McGrath will be out all season with a knee injury. She will be missed. We started off slow but by the second half of the first game we started to play,” said Miller.
In Thatcher, the Tigers sat in sixth place headed into bracket play, then reeled three straight wins, defeating Globe in two sets, Ray in two sets, Pima in two sets, but fell to Thatcher in two sets for the tournament championship.
“The Lady Tigers stepped it up,” said Miller. “I am so proud of them! There were girls playing positions that they usually don’t play because of injuries that occurred. They really stepped up and played as a team. They played with heart and supported each other. We also have some newcomers who played well.”
The Lady Tigers hosted rival Valley Union Tuesday and will take to the road Wednesday in Bisbee at 6 p.m. and Friday in Patagonia at 5 p.m. The Tigers are home again Tuesday, Sept. 11, for a 5 p.m. game with St. Gregory.
