USMC Detachment, Legion Riders’ breakfast

The Marine Corps Detachment and Legion Riders hold their monthly breakfast on the first Saturday of the month, 8 to 10 a.m., serving biscuits and gravy, eggs, sausage, coffee or juice. Cost is a $6 donation. The next breakfast is set for Aug. 4.


CPR training

The Mescal-J6 Fire District offers CPR training. Classes are held monthly, with the next class scheduled for June 30, from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $35 for Basic Heartsaver CPR or $40 for BLS Healthcare Providers. Proof of residency required; non-residents are welcome for an additional fee.

Classes are held at the MJFD Administration, 98 Oak Dr., in Mescal.


Vacation Bible School in J6

Vacation Bible School for boys and girls age 4 to sixth-grade continues through July 13, 5 to 8 p.m., at Community Bible Church, 714 J-Six Ranch Rd.

Titled “Shipwrecked, Rescued by Jesus, and features “amazing experiments, creative costumes, special tropical treats, unusually surprising adventures and incredible music.”

On Wednesday, July 18, the topic will be the Arizona Corporation Commission by Bill Mundell. Bill Mundell is a Democratic candidate for ACC Commissioner. Gov. Jane Dee Hull (R) appointed Mundell to fill a vacancy on the Arizona Corporation Commission in 1999. He won election to a full term in 2000 and to a second full term in 2004. He was prevented from running for re-election in 2008 due to term limits, which limit corporation commissioners to two consecutive terms. 


VFW Friday dinners resume in fall

The Friday dinners at Benson VFW Post 6271 will be on hiatus until September.


San Pedro Valley Word Crafters 

The San Pedro Valley Word Crafters, a new writer’s group in town, are meeting and networking with writers of all genres, skill levels, published and unpublished, on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 1 p.m. in the Benson Public Library, 300 S. Huachuca St.

Museum closed July, August

The Benson Historical Museum will be closed July and August for repairs and improvements on exhibit buildings. Current, and seven new volunteer docents, will be training on presentations for existing and  new exhibits. 

The museum has created a Media Center Area in the main building to present information on exhibits, items and the history of the area. Featured are presentations on the Curtis Flats Prehistoric Critters and The Apache Powder Story as well as presentations of Story Time for the younger visitors.

Thriving on Plants meetings

Thriving on Plants, a local plant-based education/support group holds its monthly Tuesday meeting at 5:30 p.m. for a class presented by Pam Masters, which details what a plant based raw food diet is.

Head Start applications

Applications are being accepted for enrollment in Head Start and Early Head Start at Benson School. Children born between Sept. 1, 2013 and Aug. 31, 2015 are eligible. The program offers services to families with pregnant women and children from birth to age 4.

Play Bingo Friday nights at the Benson Lions Club, 599 S. Dragoon St. Kitchen serves from 4:30-5:55 p.m. Bingo starts at 6:30. Living with loss support group

Anyone experiencing some form of loss in their lives can meet with others who are enduring some type of loss whether that be a job, death of a loved one, broken relationship or any significant loss in life. Meeting are held at St. Raphael Church, 730. S. Hwy. 80, Benson, Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
