The Benson FFA Chapter had quite an exciting summer. A number of members travelled to three different events over the last two months. Through these they were able to participate in numerous competitions, develop agricultural skills and further individual leadership.

On June 6, members attended the State Leadership Conference (SLC) in Tucson. A total of 28 members attended including three upcoming freshmen. The members first attended leadership workshops, and later rallied to support and watch Sophia Bergh, who competed in Prepared Public Speaking. Sophia Bergh placed first in the state as the Prepared Public Speaking Champion. Staying through June 8, the students attended more workshops and motivating state sessions. The annual dodgeball tournament and t-shirt contests followed- full of fun and friendly competition!

Also during SLC, Denton Fenn, the 2018-2019 Chapter President, was awarded the State Star Farmer, as well as the State Star in Agribusiness. Proficiency awards also were awarded to three individuals: for Wildlife Management, Clayson Goodwin; for Specialty Animal Production, Brett Miller; and for Beef Production, Denton Fenn. During this time, the Benson FFA Chapter received the Silver National Chapter Award.

In addition, five members of the Benson FFA Chapter obtained their State Degrees: Anthony Farmer, Remington Thola, Bryan Gutierrez, Aly Fenn and Denton Fenn. This degree takes at least three years of labor, growth, and involvement in the FFA.

Following SLC, four of Benson’s FFA members attended McPeak’s Be A Champ Camp. Mindy Crump, Gaby Dickey, Caden Barney, and Briley Barney were in Warner, Okla. at the Connor State College from June 27-30.

Also during the summer, Sophia Bergh attended the State FFA Camp in Heber. Held June 24-28, the camp featured many leadership workshops, team building activities, and opportunities for self-growth and servant-leadership. Through this short time, she received advice for becoming a stronger FFA member, a developed leader, and how to confidently stride towards individual greatness.

This October, the Benson FFA Chapter will be traveling to the National FFA Convention! At this convention, Austin Barney and Bryce Owen will receive their American Degree. Less than 1 percent of FFA members will acquire this award. Several members of the chapter will also be traveling to Nationals. Among them, Sophia Bergh will be representing Arizona as she competes to win in the Prepare Public Speaking Leadership Development Event (LDE) during the week of Nationals.
