A mechanical issue is to blame for a fender bender that resulted in an ensuing set of car fires last week that disrupted the otherwise tranquil evening in a Benson neighborhood.
The crash occurred Tuesday when a westbound 2001 Plymouth sedan veered into a parked 2012 Ford SUV on Union Street outside Ramona Morales Apartments. The mechanical issue causes the sedan to track to the left, Benson Police said. The juvenile driver overcorrected and hit the parked SUV, said BPD Chief Paul Moncada.
Both vehicles caught fire and were both a total loss.
The incident triggered a multi-agency response as authorities blocked Union Street from traffic.
