It’s a familiar sight on the July 4 parade route: The CTI flatbed truck with the Benson Bobcat Alumni/Community Band on board playing their annual selections.
And in preparation for their annual Independence Day performances, a series of practice dates have been set for Thursday June 20 and June 27, and Wednesday, July 3, each at 7 p.m., in the high school band room.
“If you need to borrow an instrument, one can be had at one of the rehearsals,” notes Band Director Hilbert Bernal, who is gathering up the musicians for their 28th year performing for the city’s July 4 activities.
The band rides the parade route playing old classics, Benson Bobcat Fight Song, Kansas City, Tequila and a few other old favorites, and performs at 7 p.m. at Lions Park.
“Let’s get together and play music and have some fun,” Bernal exclaimed. “We’ve got the truck, band room reserved for rehearsals and now musicians recruitment begins,” he said.
Anyone needing additional information is asked to call Hilbert at 586-3530 or Ernie Bernal at (520) 403-6801.
The Alumni and Community Band came to be at the urging of the late “Chic [Maldonado], who, with Bernal, had organized a reunion for the Fourth of July in 1989 and 40 people showed up. The rest is history.
This year marks the second without “Ultimate Bobcat” and Cofounder Maldonado who died in Dec. 2017.
