Mired in midst of the “dogged days” that does not necessarily mean the approaching 2019-20 school year has been on the backburner.
Quite the contrary, actually.
Benson Unified School District is now fully staffed with recent faculty and administrative additions.
Key among those hires is that of Jeff Thompson, who succeeds Benson High School Principal Ben Rodriguez whose eight-year tenure at BHS came to an end June 28. Thompson has spent 30 years as an educator, counselor, assistant principal and principal, including 17 years in Ohio and the past five as principal at Willcox Unified School District.
The school governing board made it official at its June meeting. Thompson started at BUSD on July 1, and BUSD School Superintendent of Schools Micah Mortensen is pleased to have him on board and by the prospect of the coming school year which begins July 25.
“Principal Thompson has high energy and brings a wealth of experience,” commented Mortensen. “He is going to bring great value to our students and community.”
“Jeff comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience,” Mortensen explained in a letter to high school staffers announcing his recommendation to the board. “... After retiring from the Ohio education system, Jeff came to Arizona... Throughout his career, Jeff has demonstrated a commitment to students and staff with a team approach. I spoke with Jeff’s former superintendents and each raved about his talents.”
Thompson has hit the ground running.
“I view this school year as an electrifying “keep it rolling” challenge but most importantly we will strive to engage students to perform at their highest level ever. As a proud staff member, I will do what is best for Benson High School and this community,” he stated in a July 1 letter to staffers. “... I’m looking forward to an exciting and great school year,” he continued. “I appreciate all your “team” support. Believe in yourself! Trust in your teammates! Pursue excellence! Surpass expectations! Most importantly, let’s continue to make “Benson High School the Best” as we keep it rolling!”
Mortensen went on to recognize everyone who had a hand in the search and hiring of the new principal.
“I want to thank Kim Quiroz, Kristy Reynolds, Katrina Jansson, Cassie Smith, Tad Jacobson, Sepp Sprietsma, and Bob Bernal for their diligent efforts during the hiring process. They understood the importance of the task and rose to the challenge.”
