Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts and leis were the theme at Benson High School on Friday as the school celebrated “Spring Fling,” a Hawaiian-themed event organized by student council members right before spring break.
“This is just a fun way for us to celebrate the last day of school before we’re off for our two-week spring break”said sophomore Brooke Sarappo, who serves on the school’s student council. “This is a fun way to promote school spirit and it brings the whole school together. Students were asked to participate by wearing things like flowered shirts and leis, and I think we got pretty good participation.”
During the last hour of school on Friday, students assembled in the gymnasium where they were entertained by cheer routines, a push-up contest, first the guys then the gals, and music as part of their two-week spring send off.
“We had a table surfing competition, a video that recapped winter and spring sports and we gave away gift bags to our athletes,” said Ashley Saldana, a senior student council member. “As part of capturing our Hawaiian theme, we had beach scattered around the gym for the teachers. This was the first time the student council organized a spring fling assembly, and everyone seemed to be having a good time.”
School in Benson starts up again on March 23.
