A slew of golfers are still needed to fill the roster for the Senior Meals Golf Tournament less than two weeks away.

Leisa Cotten, senior nutrition director at Catholic Community Services which oversees senior meals, is concerned with the number of openings so close to tournament time.

As of Monday, 28 player slots remained for the seven teams yet to be filled on the tournament roster. The annual tournament brings supporters from throughout Cochise County, and operation of the Senior Meals program is reliant upon the event’s success. The program, which delivers frozen meals to homebound and elder residents, continually finds itself in a tough economic climate fighting to the last minute to raise funding to continue operations another year.

CCS is some $8,000 shy of its June 30 fundraising goal. It’s not a new problem but one that seems to magnify annually.

Through the golf tournament and donations from the community, the program has been able to keep afloat, but the tournament is the key fundraiser.

“All monies raised will assist in maintaining the meals program in Northern Cochise County which currently benefits 110 seniors per day,” said Cotten.

Program volunteers deliver meals to homebound and elder residents.

Tournament format is four-person scramble. Cost is $50 per golfer with the tournament field limited to the first 30 teams.

“We are really going to have to push for teams,” Cotten said.

Not a golfer or unable to hit the links on June 16? No problem, you can still help. A $25 sponsorship donation would sponsor a senior’s meals for a year and donors can also take advantage of the Arizona Tax Credit program, where they can receive the entire donation back on their Arizona taxes simply by filling out Arizona State Form 321.

Cotten explains the tax credit is an ideal way for individuals to help out Senior Meals — while receiving 100 percent of that donation returned on their Arizona taxes.

Donors can offer up to $400 [single] and $800 [couple]. “It’s a win-win for everybody,” said Cotten. “We get the donation and donors receive their donation, all of it, back,” she said. “Every penny that we raise directly supports local senior citizens in Cochise County by paying for the meals we provide.”

First, second and third place trophies, prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive, men and women. Raffles to include golf packages from throughout Southern Arizona. All entry fees must be paid to Cochise County Sr. Meals. Entry fees will not be accepted at San Pedro Golf Course Pro Shop but can be paid day of tournament at registration desk, cash only. Team slot reservations filled on first paid basis.
