Beginning Wednesday classes will be in session at the three local school districts with St. David Unified School District beginning its 2019-20 year on Aug. 7.
Close to 400 students are enrolled at the Kindergarten through 12 school district, bringing to near 2,000 the number of students at area schools.
St. David Superintendent of Schools Arlene Kennedy pegged the number of students at “a little over 375,” for the new year while noting an exuberant start to the school year.
So far so good, she commented, explaining changes in store this year.
“The start of the new year is going great,” she said. “Teachers have been in professional development since last Wednesday and have been honing in on their skill-sets and preparing for the students... We have moved into the 90-minute block schedule for middle and high school. We are actively engaging in social-emotional learning practices for all our students and are adding classes that will open up an atmosphere of opportunities for students.”
This year’s curriculum will also boast additional offerings to include a world languages course that will introduce middle school students to a course of basic introduction on four international languages. One other change of note is early release days to Friday from Wednesday, along with the monthly job-embedded professional development to once monthly on half-day Fridays. “We are excited and look forward to a great year in St. David Unified School District,” said Kennedy.
School Principal Andrew Brogan concurred.
“The start of this school year is very exciting,” he said. “I want to thank and recognize the hard work and dedication of our staff getting the school prepared for the upcoming year. We look forward to welcoming all returning students back and getting to know our new students. I am extremely thankful for our teachers and their dedication to the success of our school. I am excited to be part of a wonderful school and a great community!”
The annual Back to School Open House on Tuesday drew its usual large turnout and included introduction of new staffers in school gymnasium as well as a tour of the campus.
Nine new instructors join the ranks of the St. David Unified School District. They are Linda Conser, Alyssa Bristow, Mary Kading, Lou Ann Angel, Greg Barker. Jason Taurins, Micheal Beilas, Maria Estevez Gonzales and Bary Judd.
Classes at BUSD and Pomerene school districts started on July 25.
