The following letter was sent to parents from Benson Unified School District Superintendent Micah Mortensen:
"I am writing to provide an update regarding COVID-19 as this situation continues to evolve.
"Yesterday afternoon, BUSD Governing Board Member, Ann Roberts and I participated in a conference call with Governor Ducey, Dr. Cara Christ, Director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, and Kathy Hoffman, Arizona State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
"Their recommendation is that schools remain open at this time.
"At this time, it is our plan to return to school on Monday, March 23rd as scheduled.
"Our administrative team is following the situation very closely and we are in frequent communication with the Cochise County Health Department. We are also preparing should this situation escalate.
"It is important to recognize that this is a fluid situation. Your child’s safety, and that of our staff and community, is of paramount importance. You can expect a communication prior to school resuming on the 23rd that will include any updates or adjustments needed to our regular school routine.
"Please feel free to reach out to me directly should you have further questions."
The decision by the district follows the announcement of many schools across the state and the country to close.
