Property owners beware. Cochise College (CC) announced their yearly property tax increase via a Truth in Taxation Statement that was published in this newspaper. They claimed they’ll be raising your property taxes by 2 percent.
Don’t believe it! In 2015 and in 2016 Cochise College said they’d raise your property taxes by 2 percent. However, the actual increase in 2015 was 7.019 percent and the actual increase in 2016 was 5.075 percent, information verified by the Property Tax Oversight Commission.
The percentage discrepancies are due to the way the property tax increases are calculated: total primary tax levy/total county property valuation vs. tax rates. I don’t know how much CC property taxes will be going up this year and neither will you until you receive your property tax bill.
Legal? Unfortunately, yes. Fair? You decide. If you are tired of the annual CC property tax increases consider doing something about it and contact your local Cochise College Board representative.
Aren’t property taxes high enough already with the yearly assessment/tax increases via the Tax Assessor’s Office and BUSD’s high property taxes? And now CC wants more. Every year since the voters of Cochise County voted down a CC bond/tax increase; CC has increased property taxes and Mr. DiPeso has voted yes for every tax increase. I say enough is enough. Please email or call Mr. Di Peso and let him know how you feel. I hope Mr. DiPeso will actively gauge the area citizens’ interest on how they feel about CC continual property tax increases, but I, for one, won’t count on it.
