BENSON — Playoff volleyball came to James Driggers Gymnasium last week and host Benson did its part to get into the big dance.
But it all came to a crushing halt Friday against Veritas Prep in Round One of the 2A State Championship Tournament as the Bobcats fell in straight sets, 3-0.
But on Tuesday, [Nov.5] the Bobcats got a taste of playoff volleyball and topped Piñon 3-1 in the 2A Play-In Tournament to secure their slot in the state championship bracket.
Benson entered the game ranked No. 16. The Bobcats won handily over the No. 17 Eagles in the first set, 25-14, then took the second, 25-21, before dropping the third, 21-25. The Bobcats stormed back for a comfortable 11-3 quickly out of the gate to secure the 25-8 win.
“I’m glad we won… not very happy we did it in four but glad we won,” said Benson head coach Katie Maakestad, in her first year as the Bobcat’s head coach. “We’ve been working on some new stuff and liked what I saw.”
More sustained consistency is one thing the coach would like to see, especially now at state tournament time when a mental slide can be the difference between advancement and elimination.
“It’s this wave… we go up and we go down and sometimes we can’t pull back up when we get down. We have the ability and talent to do it, to take state,” said Maakestad.
