BENSON — The Benson High School girls basketball team had two tough games last week as they lost to St. David and Thatcher high schools.

The Bobcats hosted St. David last Tuesday and lost 48-37 in their first game of the new year. Emily Darwin led the Bobcats with 13 points and Paige Vaughn added eight in the loss.

“We came out strong and led the first half, but could not sustain the drive,” head coach Robert Bristow wrote in a statement to the San Pedro Valley News-Sun.

On Thursday the team travelled to Thatcher for a region game and lost 43-24 for their second consecutive loss. Darwin again led in scoring, this time with 15 points.

“Again, we came out strong, but did not keep pace with Thatcher,” Bristow wrote.

Benson was back on the court on Tuesday when they hosted Morenci. Results for the game were not available at press time. They travel to San Miguel on Thursday.
