Talon Palmer and the Bobcats will look to drive to the winners bracket in the White Mountain Holiday Classic tournament at Lakeside Jan. 2-3-4.

BENSON — The Benson Bobcats will open the New Year in the high country.

Spurred on by wins in three of their last four games, the Bobcats will look to carry that momentum north to the White Mountain Holiday Classic invitational tournament in Lakeside.

The Bobcats are among the 17-team boys’ only tournament field at Blue Ridge High School Jan. 2-4. Teams will be matched in pool play on Jan. 2 then entered into bracket play on that Friday and Saturday, Jan. 3-4.

Benson will open tournament pool play Jan. 2 in a 1 p.m. game with Florence at 1 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. game with Desert Christian. The tournament will feature some of the top teams and ranging in classification from 6A to 2A, and affords each team at least two games a day.

In addition to the Bobcats, Mountain View, Ash Fork, San Luis, Marana, Desert Christian, Ganado, Florence, Blue Ridge, Fort Thomas and Show Low, Chinle, Gila Ridge, Yuma Catholic, San Tan Foothills, Tanque Verde and Copper Canyon are entered.

The Bobcats, 5-3 overall and 3-1 in section play, have come out strong to start the season.

Following the tournament, the Bobcats will host river-valley rival St. David on Tuesday, Jan. 7, before resuming league play Jan. 9 at Thatcher. Benson hosts Morenci in Jan. 14 in another league game.
