Jayse Burkett ran for two touchdowns and Shane Dezonia ran for another as Benson topped host Willcox Friday, 21-12, to retain possession of the Seney-Lohman Trophy.
The Bobcats scored 14 first quarter points and never looked back, ending the regular season on a winning note while posting the 6-4 overall record and 4-0 region mark. Benson ends the season with a No. 9 ranking and in the Class 2A State Championship underway Friday.
Dezonia rushed for 107 yards on 20 carries to lead the Bobcats’ running attack which accounted for 224 yards of Benson’s 225 yards total offense while Burkett gained 72 yards on eight carries.
Leading 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, Willcox scored in the second quarter to cut the Bobcats’ advantage to 14-6 at the half. After a scoreless third quarter, Benson added seven fourth-quarter points and the Cowboys six to cap the scoring.
Benson coach Chris Determan was pleased by the effort.
“Both teams played with high emotions, but we were lucky enough to come out on top for a W,” he said. “The kids played hard and aggressive. When we needed to get stops we got them and when we needed a drive to take the air out of the ball we were able to do so — I was very proud of our kids.”
