Leticia ‘Letty’ Lopez, Benson High School softballLeticia ‘Letty’ Lopez, a senior member of the Ladycats softball team, is excited for what the future holds for her but is very grateful for the impact high school athletics and softball have had in her life.
“I can’t wait for what the future holds for me,” Letty said, “but I am also very grateful for all the help and support I have been given throughout my high school athletic career. The Ladycat softball coaches are the best. I’ll never forget all they have done for me.” Her fondest memories include competing in the Payson / Gracie Lee Haught Softball Tournament and in the 2A state softball championship game her junior year.
Letty will be continuing her softball career as a member of the Paradise Valley Community College softball team after she graduates from high school. While competing on a softball scholarship, Letty will be studying in their STEM program and for a future medical career as a pediatrician. Following her time at PVCC, she plans to go on to either Grand Canyon University or the University of Arizona.
In high school Letty competed in volleyball and softball (9th grade scholar/athlete, AIA 2nd team all-region her junior year), and has been a member of the NHS, the LINK Crew, the FFA, HOSA, and was a member of the student council as a class treasurer her freshman and sophomore years at Willcox High School prior to transferring to Benson. An active volunteer, she has helped collect food for the local banks, worked concession stands for athletic events, is a member of the Northern Cochise Community Hospital volunteer auxiliary, and assisted at summer youth softball camps. Her hobbies include playing club softball and spending time in the outdoors.
Letty is the daughter of Robert Lopez and Rosa Quiroz.
Megan Merrill, St. David softballMegan Merrill, a senior softball player at St. David High School, has fond memories of her athletic experiences for the Lady Tigers. Her favorites include going to state in volleyball her junior and senior years and winning the 1A state title this school year while playing outside hitter.
Megan has competed in volleyball (all-region first team her senior year), tennis (her freshman and sophomore years), and softball (center field) during her high school years. She is a member of HOSA, the National Honor Society, has been on the honor roll throughout high school, is a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). She has volunteered at the school’s blood drives, with community clean-up days, and has been a youth leader at summer girls’ church camps. In her free time, she enjoys camping and spending time with her family.
After graduation Megan plans to attend Eastern Arizona College to work towards a nursing degree. She is also considering competing in college sports.
Megan is the daughter of Dustin and Andrea Merrill.
Laur’l Flake, St. David softballLaur’l Flake is a senior member of the St. David Lady Tigers’ softball team, serving her team as an honorary co-captain.
Active in athletics throughout high school, Laur’l both competed and managed for the Lady Tigers teams. She participated in volleyball all four years, basketball (competing her sophomore year and both managing and competing her junior year), tennis her freshman year, and softball her sophomore through senior years. Her favorite high school sports memory was making the winning serve in the last regular season volleyball game her senior year to win not only the match but also the game.
Laur’l also competed as a member of the St. David Academic Team her junior year. She has volunteered at summer youth camps for her church, planning activities and lessons. Her hobbies include cooking, spending time in the outdoors with her family, and making music videos.
After high school, Laur’l is planning for a career in either child day care or as a preschool teacher. Laur’l is the daughter of Cory and Ann Flake.
