Benson rallied late to knot the score at 2 but Morenci was able to score two runs of its own in the seventh inning then held off the Bobcats in the 2A State Baseball Championship tournament.
When all the dust had settled it was the Bobcats on the short end of the 4-2 count.
Senior hurler Jayse Burkett fanned 13 and turned in a stellar effort. The righty scattered four hits and surrendered two walks in 6 ⅔ innings before giving way to Ethan Coleman who tossed ⅓ of an inning.
The Bobcats’ defense committed three errors which led to two unearned Morenci runs.
Mason Fletcher and Coleman each with a hit accounted for the Bobcats’ two hits off Morenci starter Desmond Sandoval who went the distance to record the win.
It was a bitter end to a successful season for the Bobcats under new coach Fred Trujillo who with assistants Peter Meza, Billy Coleman and Alex Montijo, guided the Bobcats to a 17-9 record overall, No. 7 ranking and the state tournament postseason appearance.
Seniors Jay Haro, Chaz Paquette, Coleman, Jayse Burkett and Alvaro Montoya closed out their high school baseball careers.
