BENSON — With three returning seniors, the Benson Bobcats will field a young team on the hardwood this season.

Carson Barney, Talon Palmer and Diego Nikitas return to anchor this year’s Bobcats, who begin the season Thursday against Immaculate Heart in the opening day of the Benson Holiday Tournament.

Along with the host Bobcats, St. David, Patagonia, Immaculate Heart, San Miguel, Sahuarita, Tombstone and Empire are in the tournament.

As far as the season, head Coach Chris Taylor laid it out.

“We are going to be very young, talented, and inexperienced,” he said. “It’s going to be an incredibly fun year, we are going to make a lot of mistakes, but that being said, we are going to compete with everyone we play.”

The Bobcats host Immaculate Heart in Benson’s opener at 7 p.m. Games continue Friday and Saturday.

Despite the youth, Taylor acknowledged the Bobcats are more than capable to make some noise.

Benson begins league play against Pima on Dec. 10 and Bisbee on Dec. 13 at James Driggers Gymnasium. Each game tips at 7 p.m.

“How fast we mature as a team will determine how far we go this year, but win, lose, or draw, these boys have it in them to be special,” said Taylor.
