ST. DAVID — If the season opening Boyd Baker Tournament is to be any indication, the St. David girls basketball team could be in for a superb season.
The Tigers posted a 4-1 record en route to a runner-up finish in the season-opening tourney. The only loss for head coach Laron Richardson and the Tigers came in the championship game against Bisbee.
St. David defeated Ray, 48-22, and Amphitheater, 69-58, on Nov. 25; Glendale Prep, 57-36; and Desert Christian, 50-27, on Nov. 27, prior to the tournament title game that went Bisbee’s way, 42-37, also on Nov. 27.
The Benson Holiday Tournament is next up for the St. David ladies who open tournament play on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in a matchup with Gregory School, followed by a non-region game with Baboquivari Dec. 9, the first of four, back-to-back games. It would have been five but a scheduled Dec. 10 matchup with Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind has been canceled.
St. David begins region play on Dec. 11 when the Tigers travel to rival Valley Union in Elfrida for a 5 p.m. game and Dec. 12 when St. David hosts
Immaculate Heart. The Tigers travel to Lourdes Catholic on Dec. 13. Both games are set for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
The Tigers will put a seasoned team on the floor with seniors Kyla Trejo, Kyra Richardson, Jaylin Richardson, Zoe White and Akira Jones; juniors, Jaelyn Goodman, Brylee Murray, Sydney Klump, Kayla Judd, Alana Jones; sophomore, Hanna Allred; and freshman, Taylee Jacquez and Jazzy Pacheco.
The Tigers will look to improve on last season’s 19-9 record overall and round two defeat in the 1A state championship tournament.
