SAN PEDRO VALLEY — It’s the last week of November and in addition to Thanksgiving that can only mean one thing: Winter sports seasons are underway at the area high schools.

The Benson and St. David girls hoops teams, under the direction of coaches Robert Bristow at Benson and Laron Richardson at St. David, began their respective seasons Monday in the Boyd Baker Tournament at Amphitheater High School in Tucson.

The Benson boys will begin their season hosting the Benson Holiday Tournament Dec. 5-6-7. The Bobcats open tournament play in a 7 p.m. matchup with Immaculate Heart on Thursday, Dec. 5.

The Bobcats, under the direction of head coach Chris Taylor, scrimmaged at Empire in Vail on Thursday.

Following the holiday tournament, Benson will play at home, entertaining the Pima Roughriders on Dec. 10 and the Bisbee Pumas on Dec. 13. The Bobcats hit the road Dec. at Patagonia and Dec. 17 at Tombstone. Each game is set for a 7 p.m. tip time.

WrestlingIt’s showtime for coach Ben Katshor and the Bobcats grapplers led by three time state wrestling champion Clayson Goodwin who looks to join Alvaro Fenn as Benson High School’s only four-time state champions.

The Bobcats begin the season on the mat Wednesday in a triangular match at Sahuaro with the Cougars and Walden Grove in Tucson.

The home crowd can get the first glimpse of this year’s Bobcat grapplers Dec. 4 when Benson hosts a multi-team match. The Bobcats are in San Manuel the following day [Dec. 5] and will compete in the 40th Annual Tim Brown Invitational in Douglas on Dec. 13.

Down the Hwy. 80 at St. David, the Tigers, in the second year wrestling has been added to the sports slate at the 1A school, wrestled in a multi team match at Willcox on Tuesday.
