PRESCOTT — The St. David Lady Tigers’ hoops season came to an abrupt end Friday.
The top-ranked Tigers were upended by No. 8 Grand Canyon 57-66 in the opening round of the 1A state championship tournament in the Toyota Center.
The first quarter had the Tigers trailing the Phantoms 13-10 and 38-30 at the half. The third quarter had the Phantoms maintain their lead 50-42, then held off St. David.
“We just weren’t making our shots,” St. David coach Laron Richardson said. “It was one of those games where nothing was going our way.”
Leading the Tigers on the scoreboard were Jaylin Richardson with 19 points, Kyra Richardson with 11 points, Hannah Allred with 8 points, Alana Jones with 6 points, Brylee Murray and Kayla Judd with 4 points each, Akira Jones with 3 points, and Jaelyn Goodman with 2 points.
“We have four seniors graduating this year (Kyra Richardson, Jaylin Richardson, Akira Jones, and Kyla Trejo),” Coach Richardson said. “I’d like to thank each of them and all our players for their hard work and dedication to our basketball program. I’d also like to thank all of our fans and everyone who came out to support us throughout the season and at the state game in Prescott.”
The Tigers finished the 2019-20 season with a 27-4 record overall.
