BENSON — It’s showtime for the Benson Bobcats and head coach Randy Barney is optimistic. And for good reason.
Off strong finishes in the final two meets of the season — a runner-up overall team finish at the Benson Invitational and a third-place at Tombstone, the Bobcats’ girls may be peaking on queue. Already having posted one of the more successful seasons, the Benson ladies are poised for a strong team finish Wednesday [Nov. 6] at the sectional meet in Rio Rico.
The top 25 finishers at each sectional qualify for the Nov. 16 State Championship Meet at Cave Creek Golf Course.
The boys, off a sixth place overall finish at Benson and a strong showing at Tombstone, the girls placed third and boys seventh, have also posted a strong season. Their emergence could bode well for the future of Benson cross-country.
The Benson girls have been led by sophomore Amity Hall and senior Dalia Moroyoqui, who have provided the Bobcats with a solid one-two punch at the top of the running order, with Siarra Wilson at No. 3, Brooke Schmidt, No. 4, and Delma Santiago at No. 5, continuing to improve.
The boys, however, will be without the services of their No. 2 runner, Zach Laura who was injured at the Benson meet and out for the year to injury. Barney said No. 1 runner Sean Laura should fare well at the sectional meet.
“The girls team is looking very strong and they are favored to qualify for state. The boys have all raised their game and are making a strong push to qualify... it’s is going to come down to each of our boys running their best on that day.”
