BENSON — The Benson Bobcats’ boys and girls cross-country teams have hit the course running this season — literally.
Backed by stronger numbers and a summer regiment that is already paying dividends, the Bobcats anxiously await the Sept. 3 season opening home meet.
“We have 18 runners this year and we had our first summer camp so most of the team started running earlier this year,” commented head cross country coach Randy Barney, in his 12th year at the helm. Despite the head start, the Bobcats are young with four upperclassmen.
Barney looks for junior Sean Laura out of the No. 1 slot to bolster an able squad that includes Joseph Akers, Jacob Allard, Kolby Barney, Thomas Caywood, Max Frost, Donovan Gamez, Kyle Hatch, Zach Laura, Jason Marks and Julian Muñoz.
Sophomore Amity Hall and senior Dalia Moroyoqui will lead a girls team consisting of Briley Barney, Justice Dallaportas, Santia Delmalicia, Siarra Wilson Brooke Schmidt.
We are definitely stronger this year than last; we have a goal to take both teams to state,” the coach said.
Bobcats will run their home course twice this season with the Sept. 3 season opener and the Oct. 19 Benson Invitational.
