BENSON — In midst of a string of early-season region games the Benson boys host rival Willcox on Friday at 7 p.m., and coach Chris Taylor and the Bobcats would like nothing better than to end the week on an upswing.

The Bobcats entered play Monday standing 3-2 overall, 1-1, in section play, after having split a pair of region games and off the heels of the Benson Holiday Tournament runner-up showing.

Benson topped visiting Bisbee on Friday, 62-59, to record the Bobcats’ first region win of the year, to rebound nicely from a Dec. 10, 34-31, home conference loss to Pima. The Bobcats were on the short end of the 60-57 score at Patagonia on Monday and Tuesday’s game at Tombstone was held after press time.

To start off the New Year, the Bobcats will take part in the White Mountain Holiday Classic with a pair of games Jan. 2. The Bobcats will open that tournament with a 10 a.m. game with the Ganado Hornets followed by a 2 p.m. matinee with the Florence Gophers.

Region play heats up again following the holiday break Jan. 9 at Thatcher and Jan. 14 at home with Morenci, after Benson’s non-league home game Jan. 7 with St. David. Each game is set for a 7 p.m. tip time.
