With the 2019-20 school year underway, that can only mean football season is only a few weeks away.
Three to be exact. The Bobcats host the San Manuel Miners in the Aug. 30 prep football season opener, then take to the road over the next pair of games. Benson will travel to Morenci Sept. 6 and to Tucson’s Santa Rita High School on Sept. 13. Each game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Under the direction of head coach Chris Determan, the Bobcats align in the 2A San Pedro Section, along with Bisbee, Santa Rita, Tombstone and Willcox.
Although smaller than past teams, according to Determan, the Bobcats will rely on quickness. Seniors Talon Palmer and D’Ondre Villalobos return to help anchor the Bobcats’ roster laden with a strong mix of upperclassmen and a good corps of juniors and sophomores.
“We’re young in spots and not much depth at other spots,” the coach explained. “We need to stay healthy to be competitive this year.”
The Bobcats competed on seven on seven during the summer and the kids who committed to the weight room “made great gains,” said Determan.
On Friday, the coach implored the Bobcats on the need for discipline while reminding them there is little time before the little time before the season opens.
St. David High School, playing out of the 1A South League in 8-man football, will be the first area school to see game action. The Tigers, under the direction of coach Braden Davis, open their season on Aug. 23 at home against Mayer. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
