Nhaya Paden on the shot as the Bobcats prepare for the Sept. 4 home season opener with the Bisbee Pumas.

BENSON — Sept. 4 can’t come soon enough for coach Gary Douglas and the Benson Bobcats who’ll open the prep soccer season at home that day in a match with the Bisbee Pumas.

The Bobcats will have to be true road warriors, at least in the early portion of the season, with eight consecutive outings away from the Jerry P. Lee Athletics Complex.

And while the season opener is sure to answer questions heading into 2019 season, the Bobcats’ foray into the Show Low Invitational on Sept. 13 will provide Douglas and crew with a good barometer from which to work with as the season unfolds.

Coach Gary Douglas is optimistic for a successful season

“We have some good returners,” he said, referring to senior captain Steven Coleman, junior Liam Sprietsma and James Coleman. “We also have a strong group of freshmen, which is a testament to our AYSO program in Benson.”

The Bobcats suit up before the home crowd for the first time this year Sept. 18, hosting the Academy of Tucson Lynx, after a Sept. 17 match at Desert Christian in Tucson. Both matches are set for a 4 p.m. start time.

The Bobcats, playing out of the 2A South Region, play their first region game Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. at Patagonia.
