PINETOP — The Benson High School boys basketball team started the new year in northern Arizona competing in the 2020 White Mountain Holiday Classic, a 2A and 3A tournament hosted by Blue Ridge high School.

The Bobcats finished the three-day tournament with a 2-3 record after playing Blue Ridge, Chinle, Tanque Verde, Copper Canyon, and San Luis. Their wins came against Blue Ridge and San Luis.

“We had a great time, even though we didn’t get the results we wanted every game, the kids still played hard and bonded as a team,” head coach Chris Taylor wrote in a statement to the San Pedro Valley News-Sun.

“Every game we played was close, other than our two blowout victories. We can compete with anyone, we just have to figure out how to win close games and compete for the entire 32 minutes of the game,” he said.

Carson Barney and Devin Bowling led the Bobcats in scoring. “Grason Judd came off the bench and had a wonderful tournament and really energized our team all six games,” Taylor said. Barney was named to the All Tournament Team.

“We look forward to the next four weeks of games as we hit the main part of our schedule, and no matter how it turns out we are going to be a tough team to beat for anyone in the state,” Taylor wrote.

Benson played St. David on Tuesday after press time. They travel to Thatcher High School on Thursday.
