REGION — With the 2019-2020 basketball regular season all wrapped up, the Benson and St. David high school’s girls and boys teams have their eyes on the playoffs.

The Tigers finished up the 1A South region tournament this past weekend in Tucson. Both teams fell short of the championship title but will have a chance at the state conference title. The girls, who have an automatic bid to the state tournament for finishing first in the 1A Conference, lost 51-44 in the finals of the tournament to Baboquivari. The boys also fell to Baboquivari, 57-44, but in the semifinals.

St. David awaits the final play-in and conference bracket to be released to know who and when they play, which will be either later this week or next week.

Benson’s girls opened the 2A East region tournament Monday and Tuesday. They defeated Morenci 36-31 Monday on their home court to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. They travel to Bisbee High School to take on the region leading Pumas with a trip to Friday’s championship game on the line. Bisbee swept the season series this year en route to their 16-1 season.

Regardless of the outcome of the tournament, the Bobcats are ranked high enough that they should earn a play-in game in the state tournament.

The boys were ranked No. 27 headed into the region tournament and will need a strong showing to reach the 24-team state postseason. They played Morenci in their first game of the region tournament on Tuesday at Morenci. The results were not available at press time.
