ST. DAVID — The St. David Tigers begin the 2019 prep volleyball season Saturday at the Morenci Invitational Tournament, and coach Tylene Miller and crew no doubt are anxious to get started. The tourney will offer the Tigers plenty of game action.
The perennially tough Tigers, playing out of the 1A South Region, are coming off a stellar 2018 season that saw the Tigers finish as 1A State runners up and posting a 20-7 record overall.
The Tigers will look to take that a step further in 2019, boasting a strong and experienced arsenal of returning players in senior hitters Megan Merrill, Jaylin Richardson, Camilla Freestone, Kyra Richardson, Kyla Trejo and setter Jorja Moore. Libero or defensive specialist Brylee Murray will help anchor a strong corps of returning juniors to include Kayla Judd, Sydney Klump and Goldi Merrill.
The Tigers host Tohono O’Odham Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. for St. David’s home opener.
The football Tigers, after Thursday’s win that was called prior to the half, will look to get a full game of football in. At least that’s how coach Braden Davis sees it.
The Tigers will now have to play solidly on the road, beginning Friday at NFL YET in Phoenix and the first of five straight road games.
“It should be a good game,” the coach said. “NFL is big, fast and athletic.” Game time is set for 7 p.m.
