With the 2019-20 school year just around the corner, it won’t be long before the sound of fight songs and cheerleaders permeate the nighttime air.

Preparations have been ongoing for the full roster of fall sports set to start in just over a month at the area schools. The gridirons and volleyball courts at Benson and St. David, along with the cross-country course at Benson, will be abuzz with activity.

Under the direction of head coach Chris Determan, the Bobcats are on the road in two of their first three football games this season. After the Aug. 30 home season opener against San Manuel, the Bobcats travel to Morenci Sept. 6 and are at Santa Rita in Tucson on Sept. 13. Each contest is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The Bobcats align in the 2A San Pedro Section along with Bisbee, Santa Rita, Tombstone and Willcox.

The Benson volleyballers will have a new head coach. Longtime assistant Katie Maakestad takes over the helm with Kayla Tracey assisting.

“I am excited to have her [Maakestad] on board as she has been with these girls as a JV coach for many years and she brings a level of stability,” said BHS Athletic Director Tad Jacobson. “I am equally excited about her assistant Kayla Tracey. She knows these kids well as she coached two years ago and just took last year off to raise her young family. I think the both of them have great energy and are going to work well together.”

The Bobcats spikers, playing out of the 2A East Region, open the season at home Sept. 4 with a 5 p.m. encounter with Gregory School. Benson travels the next day to Valley Union for a 6 p.m. match with the Blue Devils. The Bobcats will play St. David there on Sept. 24 at 5 p.m.
