BENSON — With end Tuesday of the regular-season volleyball schedule following the Senior Night game against No. 1 Thatcher, the Bobcats will now keep their fingers crossed in hopes of getting into the state tournament bracket.

The Bobcats, under the direction of new head coach Katie Maakestad, have had a winning regular season. Despite bouts of inconsistency, the Bobcats have proven more than formidable when firing on all cylinders.

Benson stands 10-5 overall, 7-4 in region play, following Monday’s 3-1 region loss at Morenci, 21-25, 19-25, 25-21, 22-25.

Holding down the No. 12 ranking entering play on Monday, Tuesday’s game was held after the News-Sun’s press time. The Bobcats are looking to nab one of the 16 slots for the Nov. 5 play-in tournament and should get in, barring a drastic drop in the rankings. Of course an upset of Thatcher would propel the Bobcats higher in the rankings.

Emily Darwin with 130 kills good for No. 2 in the region, leads the Bobcats’ power game with Victoria Hockenbury and Tatum Benson on the 2A East leaderboard in assists with 73 and 66 respectively.

Defensively, in the region, Darwin with 99 blocks leads the 2A East and is followed in succession by Shaylin Taylor, 65; Paige Vaughn, 53; Ally Jennings, 23; and Sierra Garner in at seventh with 18 blocks. Darwin also leads the region in digs with 191.
