TUCSON — Benson High School baseball opened their season by participating in the Cowboy Up baseball tournament, hosted by Sabino High School, this past weekend.
The Bobcats were 3-2 over the three-day tournament. Benson started the weekend with a 7-6 win over Catalina on Thursday. The Bobcats scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the win. D’Ondre Villalobos was 1-for-3 and Grason Judd was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Benson lost their only game on Friday 19-10 to Pueblo. The Warriors used a 5-run top of the first inning to swing momentum in their favor from the very start. Benson registered just nine hits. Villalobos had two hits and two RBIs and Mason Fletcher was 3-for-4 in the loss.
The Bobcats went 1-1 in the their doubleheader on Saturday. The day started with a 6-5 loss to Sabino. Benson scored the first five runs in the first but Sabio scored three in the fourth and fifth to win the game. Wyatt Williams has three RBIs in the loss and Tristan Martinez led Benson with two hits. The Bobcats bounced back with a 10-3 win over St. Augustine. The scored four runs in the top firs and five in the first to propel them to victory. Williams struck out seven St. Augustine batters as well as went 3-for-3 at home plate.
Benson ended their tournament on a high note with a 10-0 win over Rincon. Mundo Esparza pitched all five innings and didn’t allow a run. Martinez was 3-for-3 in the game while Judd and Brok Determan were each 2-2. Rigney had four RBIs in the win.
The Bobcats played Tuesday at Desert Christian but results were not available at press time. They travel to Pima on Friday.
